My child, pay attention to my words; listen closely to what I say. Don’t ever forget my words; keep them always in mind. They are the key to life for those who find them; they bring health to the whole body. Be careful what you think, because your thoughts run your life. Don’t use your mouth to tell lies; don’t ever say things that are not true. Keep your eyes focused on what is right, and look straight ahead to what is good. Be careful what you do, and always do what is right. Don’t turn off the road of goodness; keep away from evil paths. Proverbs 4: 20-27 (1)
We unconsciously retain information. Marketers have been aware of this for years and bombard us with subliminal messages. Advertisements are around us, whether or not we acknowledge them. We store the information without even noticing and sometime later, we may find ourselves fighting the impulse to spend money we don’t have on something we don’t need…
As I read the passage above, my mind went back to my childhood days. My parents always gave us direction guidance about everything from meals to relationships. Years later, I still ‘hear’ their voices and still continue some of their practices. What if we made a conscious effort to take in as much of His words as we could? What if we deliberately went ‘out of our way’ to read His words and ingest them? What if we chose to gorge ourselves on His word so that when we speak ‘from the overflow of our hearts’, our words will be His words, useful for – “ teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness”, 2 Timothy 3:16 (2)
Proverbs 4:20-27 contains much of what we need for effective Christian living, but the Bible is a complete book. If we only read the parts we like or find easier to read, we would be missing out on so much more! To become like Him, we must spend time reading His word and allowing His words to shape our thoughts and behaviours. It is said that we will likely become what we spend the most time doing. How have you been spending your day?
Inventory /Introspection: What percentage of my day do I dedicate to reading/studying His word (How has His Word influenced my daily life? Have I been spending as much time in Bible Reading / Bible Study as I should? How can I arrange my priorities to make sure I spend more time on the things that matter to Him? )
Father, I am thankful that I have the freedom to read Your word wherever and whenever I please. I do not take this for granted but there are days I don’t spend as much time reading Your map. You give clear and specific directions but I don’t always do what You say. No wonder I get lost sometimes.
I want to know more about You, to grow closer to You and to be more like You to the glory of Your name.
I pray You will restore the passion we had when we first met You. That we would have a hungering and a thirsting to read Your words and allow You to change our hearts. Help us to make the practical decisions that will enable us to spend more time doing the things that matter to You. Life happens, yes, but we get to choose how we spend each precious moment You give us… Help us to make the right decisions and to allow You to “direct our paths”. Amen
Blessings,
ann

God bless you, Sister Pat
Iron sharpens iron 🙂 May we continue to support and encourage each other to the glory of His name.
Your latest post had me marveling about the awesome God we serve. How amazing is He?
Praying we’ll feast on His words so that in time of testings we can speak His promises back to Him. Your son showed us a real life example of what living close to Daddy can do 🙂
May God strengthen you as you lift your family to Him.
Under His wings,

This translation is sooo powerful, Ann full of Jesus grace, as is the post! Thank you. There is something about how it is worded . . .do we realize all that He is saying to us here? Do I understand how important His word is to every aspect of my life? I pray so! That something so doable and available for us can make such a difference in our lives and others!
God bless you as you take in more and more of His word and translate it into a beautiful life lived for Him!

Dearest delightful Deb,
Thank you. Bless His name
“… someting so doable and available for us can make such a difference in our lives and others!”
Indeed! Not half as difficult as it appears, is it?
I read this passage in a few different versions but this one seemed to arrest my thoughts and point me towards the reality I needed to face. Pointed? Yep. Necessary? You bet! Doable? Easier than we imagine 🙂
Even your comments sound like poetry! 🙂 ( may He continue to stir up the gifts within you. )
Blessings right back at ya! Thanks for breaking down His words in ‘simple’ poems to help us with understanding and life applications. Praying your strength for the months and years ahead.
Blessed

Ann, I recently purchased a 16-CD set of Johnny Cash reading the entire New Testament (NKJV). The full running time is 19 hours. I know the NT is much smaller than the Old Testament, but if you extrapolated from this reading time of the NT to the entire Bible is would probably take about 95 – 100 hours to read the whole of God’s Word. Yet it has taken me over a year to get through just half of my Bible-in-a-year reading schedule! This really opened my eyes to the fact that I don’t set aside enough time to read scripture. This was a real eye opener for me. Now I just need to get Johnny Cash onto my iPod so I can start listening to it, too. 🙂 Peace, Linda

Linda, you’ve made a great point.
The wheels started turning as I read your response. I can’t add up the amount of hours I spend in transit, whether waiting for a flight, on a flight or sitting as a passenger over a long trip…. I have three versions of the Bible on my iPod… There’s so much more I can do besides crossword puzzles or catch up on phone calls… I just never gave it a lot of thought before 😦
Thanks for the idea.
Blessings,

Hi Ann,
This is a powerful and introspective message! Just recently, I was thinking about writing a post titled, “Hiding The Word in Our Hearts.” I thought about what we needed to do, in order to hide the Word in our hearts. I thought about reading the Word, meditating on it, and memorizing Scriptures. The Scripture that came to mind was, “Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Perhaps your post is a confirmation, of what I need to be doing more of. Thank you for allowing the Lord to use you in this way! Also, thank you for the prayer. (Great comments too!)
God bless you, my friend!

God bless you too, Dear Minister.
“I thought about what we needed to do, in order to hide the Word in our hearts. I thought about reading the Word, meditating on it, and memorizing Scriptures. ”
Maybe that is the confirmation indeed! All glory to His name! That verse from Psalm has so much in it. Hiding His words in our hearts is a great idea! Looking forward to another insightful post from you 🙂
Let’s keep praying for each other.

I will be leaving in about 30 minutes for my very first class in 25 years. I am taking 15 hours this semester. My husband went back to school last fall, and has classes today, too. Plus my youngest child…my 17 year old daughter starts college today, as well. We will all be piling into the van in a little while. Please remember us in prayer.
Blessings,

What a wonderful encouragement.
I remember public speakers talking about the persecuted Church some 40-50 years ago and encouraging us to memorise whole chapters of the Bible because we never knew when it would be taken from us.
Today, that warning holds much more possibility. We in America, Australia, and other privileged countries are no longer able to be confident that we will always enjoy the religious freedom we now enjoy. We have seen many of these being challenged in the courts and even taken from us. The idea that we could be forbidden access to the Word isn’t quite so foreign. It could happen. Storing God’s Word in our hearts is a precaution for if it does.
Of course, regardless of the above, we _N_E_E_D_ God’s Word as a continual food supply. We need to read it, meditate on it, take it to heart, memorise it and LIVE by it. What a difference it would make in our world if we did it consistently!

You are so right!! What a difference it would make indeed! And to think that is it not something that is impossible or out of our reach…

I love how you speak on “gorging” ourselves on His word, overflowing with Him and then being shaped in thought and behavior–what a testimony we should be if we truly considered His Word–His thoughts, His intentions, His mission to be Life and all we could possibly desire! Thanks for the encouragement.

You are most welcome, Sister. Let’s keep encouraging each other to the glory of His name.
“–what a testimony we should be if we truly considered His Word–His thoughts, His intentions, His mission to be Life and all we could possibly desire! ”
Can you imagine the testimony our lives would be?!! We have the tools to affect our world for Him. Praying we don’t miss the moments.
Blessings to you, Elaine

When I was writing advertising for a radio station, we called good marketing “top of the mind awareness”… making the information stick whether the listener wanted it to or not. It was very effective.
Isn’t it a blessing when those memorized verses overflow and give us wisdom when we need it most.? Is there anything else we can study that can offer what God does?
Yeh, I’m guilty of reading the easy stuff (Proverbs!) But it’s all good, all good! Maybe I will be motivated by your post and re-read Leviticus. Hugs… : )

Blessings, Linda 🙂
“Isn’t it a blessing when those memorized verses overflow and give us wisdom when we need it most.? ‘
A blessing indeed! Our Pastor spoke today about how we ought to respond in the face of adversity. Made me think … since it is what’s inside us that’s going to come out, we out to be very careful of what goes in.
Let me know how your reading schedule goes. I’m trying to write down something I’ve learned from at least one verse of each chapter in the Bible (even Leviticus 😉 ) Between Ben’s expositions , Deb’s Poems and Pastor J’s chapter charts, I think I’m well on my way!
Praying His sustenance as you work on this.
In His Service,
