Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors they succeed. (Proverbs 16:22)
Have you ever seen ants at work? I once observed a group of ants moving food. Initially, one ant came across a piece of cracker and tried unsuccessfully to move it. In no time, another ant appeared, then another, then a few more. Before long, they had all banded together and were busily moving their meal to storage. The ants reminded me of the importance of asking others to help carry our burdens, instead of trying to make it on our own.
The tower of Babel was a project that seemed destined to succeed. Had God not intervened, the inhabitants of the plains of Shinar would have succeeded in building “ a tower that reaches up to heaven”, simply because they were all in agreement, “speaking the same language”. (Genesis 11:1-9)
When the Israelites and the Amalekites were at war, the Israelites prevailed as long as Moses had his hands up. (Exodus 17: 8-13). Joshua and the Israelites were victorious because Aaron and Hur chose to stand by Moses and help lift his hands high in his moment of weakness… Is there someone whose hands you can help to hold up today?
If you know of someone who is in a place of pain and you don’t know how to offer help, how about gathering a group of faith-filled Bible-believing Christians to pray for their needs? Sometimes a simple “I am praying for you”, can make a huge difference to someone who feels alone in their situation.
On the other hand, asking for help can put us in an uncomfortable position. We sometimes face uphill battles on our own, not because that is our only option, but because we choose not to seek help. A fellow believer may not be able to literally walk the road with us, but we can reach out and ask for prayer as we go through the valley. Do you feel like you are facing an impossible task? Does it seem like there’s that one mountain that refuses to move out of your way? Sometimes He moves the mountains. At other times He sends others to come alongside us and pray us through the rough spots. If you feel alone as you tackle your tasks, may I encourage you to seek help? “ Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” Ecclesiastes 4:12
There are some things that just can’t be done on your own….“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors they succeed”
Inventory / Introspection: Whose advice have I been following?
Personal Application: Am I willing to allow myself to be used by Him to bring help to others? Am I ready to allow Him to use others to help me through the difficult patches?
Father, I thank You for the examples in Your word and the examples in our daily lives that show we cannot live on our own. Thank You for reminding us that we need to support each other, even as we are being supported.
I pray You will help us to honestly earnestly seek out help when we need it and to push pride aside. Help us to keep our eyes and ears open to those around us who may be in need of help and to use the gifts that You have blessed us with to help others to the glory of Your name
