To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:31-36
On our way to church one Sunday morning, we were surprised by the sudden flashing lights and the sirens behind us. We were even more surprised when we were asked to pull over. We did as requested, readied our documents for the anticipated examination. We sat there waiting as the relevant checks were done, and even though we knew we had done no wrong, the fact that we were being interviewed made us feel uncomfortable. The officer completed his audit and having found everything in order, bade us good morning and drove off.
The laws of our country dictate that we should keep certain documents as a part of our driving privileges or suffer the consequences. Even though our records were clear, we felt like a weight was lifted from our shoulders as the officer left. We were free to go. We had done nothing wrong, but hearing him say we could go brought a deep sense of relief.
Our loving Father has set forth guidelines that we need to follow – if we disobey, there are consequences. We can choose to live for Him and avoid any unpleasant surprises on That Day. All of us will be required to give an account for the way we have lived our lives. Will His review of our experiences bring us rejoicing or regrets? When He completes His ‘audit’ of our lives, will we hear “well done, My good and faithful servant”, or “depart from Me, I know you not” …? (Matthew 25:14-30)
The state of our affairs will determine whether we spend joyful eternity in His presence, or whether we will suffer eternal damnation.
What will it be?
· If I have not yet received Jesus as Lord and Saviour, what is it that is holding me back?
· If He summons me before His presence today, will my record be clear?
Father, thank You for salvation and for the opportunity we have to get our records cleaned up and our slates wiped clean!
Guidelines are put in place for our benefit. May we be as vigilant in living for You as we are about abiding by the rules and laws of our nations. Because we are flesh, we sin daily, but may we never take your grace for granted. May we always seek to follow after Your footsteps and to live in the freedom that Your love and grace brings.
Lord Jesus, the signs of Your return are popping up everywhere. Help us to eagerly spread the Word so others will learn of You and the eternal life You offer. We owe our new lives to you. May You be glorified as we share Your love with others. Amen
